In this 1946 comedic role, 18-year-old Arlette Lafon (35-year old Ginger Rogers) has a Doris-Day-mixed-with-Nancy-Drew screen presence. She is lively, funny, and virtuous. Her morality makes her an obvious misfit for what will take place. Leaving reform school, Arlette joins a French pickpocket class headed by a very animated Professor Aristide (Basil Rathbone of Sherlock Holmes fame) to have room and board. With natural acting ability, she becomes a star pupil despite her desire to be honest. Unhappy with the thought of stealing, she contemplates returning to reform school. A befriended pickpocket classmate convinces her that entering a 'white marriage' of convenience would prevent her from that unpleasant destiny.
All she needs is money to pay for the arrangement. With such a noble goal in mind, she sets out for the French public with her newly learned craft. The temporary success of her first heist leads to a guilty conscious. This is one of the best collection of musicals that TCM has produced. Loving musicals I enjoyed each one of these exquisitely restored RKO films with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Perhaps, TCM placed these in volume 1 for being considered the best in the series. In fact, I strongly believe that this is the best group of musicals of the thirties.
In my opinion, Sandrich does with the musical what I think no one could have done during this period: weaving the screwball comedy with the musical in an effective manner. Sandrich directs these films except Swing Time, which was directed by George Stevens. Sandrich's films are welll-structured, accommodating the songs and the dance sequences in a very effective manner. Under Sandrich, these predictable plots move in a cohesive manner and with precision. In addition to this, producer Hermes Pan invites the best song writers of the period. I've ADORED this movie for years and have eagerly awaited it's arrival on DVD. I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys classic movies, Ginger Rogers or David Niven.
Ginger and David are both adorable and Ginger gets to shine as a fine comic actress out of the great shadow of Fred Astaire. Ginger does very little dancing in this movie but she is charming and very funny. The only problem is that I was disappointed in the quality of the film. I was thinking that it would have been cleaner and sharper but it's not; however, the sound is good. The quality does not detract from the film and I strongly recommend it.

This movie features one of the finest scores ever written for a film, by the great George Gershwin, with lyrics for the songs by his brother Ira. George Gershwin was the first to score an entire picture with 'Shall We Dance'; he provided all the background music, ranging from ballet to swing numbers, even a small ensemble piece for walking a dog. Fred Astaire's amazing solos and his pairings with Ginger Rogers are all classic dance numbers. The DVD extras include a delightful documentary on the music for the film, and an informative commentary. Ginger Rogers was very popular, both within the Hollywood community, and with the moviegoing public. With two strong performances in 1940, she took home the Oscar despite strong competition. Rogers perfectly captured the dilema of every American girl who worked for a living.
Her portrayel of a young woman having to decide between a young woman's daydream of what love would be like and the real thing is flawless. Sam Wood directed this very entertaining film based on Christopher Morley's popular book.Ginger is Kitty Foyle, a career girl from Philadelphia who falls for her boss, Wyn Strafford (Dennis Morgan), in what she thinks is everything she's dreamed about all her life. Wood used a snowglobe as a transitional device to Kitty's flashbacks of their romance, just as George Stevens had used a phonograph in Penny Serenade the previous year. Kitty and Wyn are no longer together, their brief marriage ending. The stories may be silly and the jokes a little old (say 75 years old) but the dancing is to die for.
When Fred and Ginger step on the dance floor, your face automatically starts to break out in a smile only broken by the occasional need to say 'Wow!' Or 'How did they do that?' Let's get the story line over with right away: He meets her. He annoys her. He pursues her. She falls for him.
They dance and dance and dance. You get out of breath but they keep going. She twirls around an impossible number of times on high heels going backward and you get dizzy but she never does.

At the end you have been entertained and you know it. Too bad they only did ten movies together but Fred had other partners and I. This is a wonderful little movie with charming performances by rogers and lederer. Rogers os adorable as a chorine taking care of her kid brother.
Lederer is irresistible as an illegal imigrant. This is relatively early in rogers career, (considering she worked til the 60s) so she still has that baby charm to her with those bouncing blond curls! She and lederer have great chemistry. The sexiest scene is when they're answering a telephonme together, and he starts to lick the inside of a chocolate-covered spoon while looking at her. If you don't understand this metaphor, than you are incredibly dense. All in all, this is a great movie, but mostly recommended ofr old film buffs, just because they may appreciate it more.
